Life is a preparation for the future

Hello.

So, who is this strange kid?

i'm marcus. i was born at a very young age in Cape Town, the "Mother City" of South Africa. My parents, a high school teacher and a school librarian, still stay in Cape Town in the house in which i was raised.

i did most of the normal kid-stuff growing up: attended Bergvliet High School; enjoyed hockey and athletics; probably developed quite a tan sitting in front of computers programming and so on; and spent a year at the University of Cape Town studying Geomatics Engineering (land surveying, cartography, etc.), before winding up with a diploma in datametrics (computer science, etc.) from the Unversity of South Africa (Unisa), and a bunch of job references (in programming, photography, and printing) during the few years that took. For more on all that boring curriculum vanitas stuff, and to see what strange company i keep, surf over to my LinkedIn profile.

These days, i'm privileged to live in splendid Stellenbosch, a university town in the heart of the winelands, boasting some of the most beautiful mountains and vistas in the Cape.

My daylight hours are mainly spent keeping computers and clients happy at GivenGain, where we assist non-profit organisations in their fundraising and supporter admin.

Come the evening, artificial light dispels the gloaming as i turn to my school books -- since 2003 i've been studying psychology and education, also through Unisa, and looking to a passage in the Bible, Colossians 2:2-3, as my inspiration:

My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in Whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. (NIV)

Weekends often find me outdoors, hiking, cycling, caving, or (as now, with a knee injury) dreaming of those activities. On a rainy day, i'll be quite and quietly content to settle down with a good book, or stare at a blank page until my pen finds inspiration.
